"I thought Teggs & Dal coped well in the 2nd half"

A Remembrance Sunday To Forget writes Guillem Balague

Ascot United 3 vs La Chiesa 0

Did we deserve more from the game?

La Chiesa are still searching for their first Corinthian League victory after being beaten 3-0 by Ascot United at Goodmayes Park this Sunday.

Following last weeks encouraging draw against St Augustines, hopes were high that this could be the week La Chiesa celebrated their first three point haul, but things started to go wrong almost immediately, when Warren Hardwick pulled up with a hamstring injury and had to be replaced. What an unfortunate time he is having with injuries this year. Soon after, fellow centre back John Riley suffered the same fate, and although midfielders Darren Hodsoll and Terry Soteriou filled in capably, LCDC's gameplan was ruined.

They held out until just before half time. A ball down Ascot's left wing led to a race between Kevin Skinner and Mark Harris. It was neck and neck until Chiesa's injury jinx struck again, and Harris pulled up, victim of yet another hamstring problem. Skinner was left clear, and La Chiesa knew their luck was out when he sliced his attempted cross into the roof of the net, leaving Danny Hardwick wrong footed. Minutes later it was two when Ascot exposed the space left by Harris' absence down La Chiesa's right, and James Hames converted the cross to leave the ten men from Hornchurch with an uphill task.

Player Manager Sam Knowles, himself still struggling with the ankle problem he picked up when the two teams met at Coopers last month, replaced Riley at half time, and La Chiesa started the second half with a 3-4-2 formation.

Chiesa played some neat football in the second half, keeping it simple, and passing the ball as well as they have done for a while. Danny Trew was winning everything in the air and if Knowles had his shooting boots on, they may have had a  chance of getting back in the game. Cy Taylor released 'The Gaffer' with a perfectly weighted pass, only to see him lift his shot over both the keeper and the bar. With that went all hope of a point for the visitors, and the final nail in the coffin came fifteen minutes from time when Ben Harvey got on the end of a right wing cross to make it 3-0 with an emphatic finish. More bad news followed when Knowles was forced to hobble off in the 83rd minute, the old ankle problem rearing it's ugly head.

Strange as it may seem this was an improvement on the performance by LCDC when the sides met at Coopers, although the scoreline was less flattering. One point from their opening four league matches doesn't make happy reading for La Chiesa fans, while Ascot remain unbeaten at the other end of the table. Today's result means next week's clash between La Chiesa and Esprit at Coopers has become a six pointer of biblical proportions... Bring it on!
