And so it came to pass that La Chiesa played their final game
on Sunday April 9th 2006, a 6-4 defeat to Sprint at Cottons Park, Romford. A typical kamikaze affair it was, end to
end stuff, missed pens, general chaos, a fitting way for the LC/DC to bow out.
A pipe dream of starting a team from a bunch of ne'er do wells in their late twenties down
the pub that became reality, La Chiesa almost achieved glory in 2004 when reaching the Arthur Atkinson Cup Final and threatened
to challenge for promotion on two occasions only to falter in the final furlong.
But results were not the be all and end all for LC/DC, the thrill of playing football
with your REAL mates rather than ten A.N Others that you wouldnt see from Monday to Saturday made for three years of
great pub banter, Monday morning hangovers and lively debates over formations and tactics that I am glad to have been part
of. Degenerating into just any old side full of ringers and 'outsiders' (Hornchurch
IS Hicksville after all), by advertising for players or poaching from other teams would have undermined
the whole point of the team starting in the first place. Better to quit while we are only marginally behind!
